I have been working in clay since 1972, primarily with wheel-thrown stoneware. On the wheel, I begin with a controlled idea of form and finish with asymmetric design elements that soften and enhance the pottery.
Coil-built and slab vessels balance the thrown pieces. The coiled pieces begin with a looser idea of form that is given definition and precision as they are finished. The slab pieces start with rectangles that are purposely softened as the pieces are formed.
Layering glazes and stains and adding brushwork complete the work.
I am especially interested in subtle nuances of shape and color and how they complement each other. Firing in a reducing atmosphere gives variation in color and texture that adds depth to each piece.
